Dance at UNCG

In the Department of Dance at UNCG, we believe that the field of dance needs many different kinds of professionals with diverse strengths and points of view. Rather than trying to make a standardized product, we recognize that students enter the Department as individuals, and will pursue diverse paths and accomplish different outcomes. We facilitate students' journeys through a number of programs with common concerns: the lived experience of dancing, creative and critical engagement with performance and choreography as expressive mediums, and the development of the individual in relationship to community. We strive to develop in our students the imaginative, critical, and technical skills essential to the creative process, scholarly inquiry, and professional engagement in the field of dance. Our undergraduate degree programs combine a liberal arts curriculum with professional preparation for further study or for a variety of dance careers. We offer a BA and a BFA in dance, both with the option to add a teaching license.  We mentor our graduate students through MA and MFA curricula, which blend artistry, teaching, and scholarship. We believe in bodily knowledge as an important way of knowing, not just for dancers, but for all people, and in the aesthetic and social discourses of performance and choreography. We also realize that bodily engagement and creative thinking must be accompanied by self-reflection and critical engagement. Our place in a liberal arts institution is valued because it fosters an engagement with the world and development of artistic, intellectual, political, social, and moral perspectives. Our graduates create successful and productive lives for themselves in dance at state, regional, national, and international levels. We invite you to learn more about us.

An AUDITION is required of those interested in joining UNCG's degree program(s) in Dance.  For those interested in minoring in Dance, an audition is not required.
