Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Theatre Education
The Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Theatre Education degree is designed for in-service K-12 teachers holding North Carolina’s Standard Professional Licensure in Theatre Arts who are seeking advanced training, professional development, and an Advanced Masters Licensure in Theatre. The Department of Theatre offers the state’s only approved M.Ed. in Theatre Education, providing the means through which North Carolina K-12 theatre teachers can pursue professional development that also results in a salary increase. The M.Ed. in Theatre Education degree requires 37 semester hours of coursework. As noted, applicants must have a SP1 level teaching licensure in K-12 Theatre Arts or its equivalent and should have completed a minimum of one academic year of teaching. Up to 9 semester hours of credit taken prior to admission to the M.Ed. program may be applied towards the degree if the Department of Theatre and the Graduate School grant such approval. M.Ed. in Theatre Education students do not take theatre course work during the regular academic year; all theatre course work is completed during a special sixteen-day, intensive annual summer session called the Summer Institute for Theatre Education (SITE).
