Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Directing

The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Directing degree is designed to train theatre directors to become working artists in professional and/or academic theatre. The MFA in Directing is a terminal degree providing advanced specialized training in the art and craft of directing. The MFA in Directing program is competitive, accepting only two students every other year, ensuring that classes are small and training is personal. Students take a core of courses in directing, theatre history, dramatic theory and criticism, dramatic literature, design, and collaboration. MFA in Directing students must complete a 60 semester hour course load designed to provide a basis for synthesizing the historical-theoretical-literary areas of directing with the practicalities of production. The program also requires a Master Production consisting of directing a mainstage production as part of the UNCG Theatre season, along with submission of a formal analytical paper, director’s promptbook, and rehearsal journal. MFA in Directing students are expected to serve as assistant director and/or dramaturg to faculty directors as assigned and to direct Mainstage, Theatre 232, Theatre for Youth, Studio, and/or Workshop productions as approved by the faculty. In addition to work on campus theatre productions, students who have not held a summer internship or had a professional theatre experience in the past are required to complete an approved internship prior to graduation. In addition to internship programs, the Department of Theatre encourages approved directing work outside the University, including, when possible, at Triad Stage, a professional regional theatre located in downtown Greensboro.
