Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Theatre for Youth
The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Theatre for Youth degree is a terminal degree program designed to educate theatre artists for leadership roles within the growing field of theatre with and for youth. Candidates for this program demonstrate a dedication to working with young people through drama-in-education and theatre for young audiences. The Master of Fine Arts in Theatre for Youth is a 60-semester-hour degree program. Students take classes in Drama-in-Education, Theatre for Youth, Theatre-in-Education, puppetry, and directing. Additional electives ensure the program caters to each student’s area of interest. Professional guest artists engage in residencies each year, bringing multiple perspectives to the curriculum. The MFA in Theatre for Youth program is competitive, accepting only two students every other year. To gain acceptance into the MFA in Theatre for Youth program, students must first be admitted to the University by the Graduate School. Students are required to interview and submit a portfolio that may include promptbooks, production photos, directorial position papers, dramaturgical research, outreach guides, lesson plans, and/or a record of their theatre for youth experience. During their course of study, students are expected to participate in campus productions through the North Carolina Theatre for Young People (NCTYP) production series. Internships are also encouraged, usually during summer months, and are arranged in consultation with an advisor. The Department of Theatre encourages approved work outside the University. The department has partnerships with Triad Stage, a professional regional theatre located in downtown Greensboro, and the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival. The Department of Theatre also prepares and sends students to regional and national competitions, symposia, and conferences.
