UNCG School of Music, Theatre and Dance

SITE - Summer Institute for Theatre Education

SITE is a three-week summer program consisting of intensive, graduate-level classes that allow in-service K-12 Theatre Arts teachers to enhance their knowledge of Theatre Arts. Within this enrichment experience, teachers may also:

  1. earn CEUs toward licensure renewal
  2. fulfill theatre-based requirements for lateral entry or an add-on licensure in Theatre Arts, OR
  3. pursue a Master of Education (M.Ed) degree with Advanced Masters (M) teaching licensure in K-12 Theatre Arts.

Regardless of purpose, all in-service teachers are welcome to register for SITE courses during the summer.

Three courses are offered for each SITE program session, each meeting for two-and-a-half hours a day during the 16 weekdays of the session. These theatre-based courses are selected from the M.Ed. degree curriculum and offered in a 3 to 5 year rotation.

Teachers must register for each class individually. UNCG lists the theatre courses offered under Second Summer Session courses, however the courses are not labeled as SITE courses. Instead, they can be distinguished from the regular summer session courses by the dates during which they are offered, normally ending the third week in July.

Students may earn up to 9 semester hours of graduate level credit towards an M.Ed. in Theatre Education during each annual session. Those seeking licensure renewal can receive 4.5 CEUs for each course.

TO REGISTER FOR COURSES:

  1. Those seeking CEUs for licensure renewal or personal enrichment should register as a visiting student through the Division of Continual Learning (DCL) external link. Licensure renewal candidates must check with their local school system to determine what coursework and documentation is required before applying to take a SITE course.
  2. Those seeking courses for lateral entry or an add-on licensure should first consult with a Regional Alternative Licensing Center (RALC) external link in order to confirm that the courses offered will apply toward a Plan of Study. Only after this process is completed, should candidates register as a visiting student through the Division of Continual Learning (DCL) external link.
  3. Prospective M.Ed. candidates may register through the Division of Continual Learning (DCL) external link while their application is being processed. If accepted into the M.Ed. program, up to nine hours of SITE credit may be applied retroactively. Accepted M.Ed. students should register for SITE courses through UNCGenie external link.

Special note: When registering, occasionally a course-restricted block will occur for visiting students. If this occurs, please contact the professor of the course as well as the Director of SITE.
